London Olympics 2012

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012, followed by the 2012 Paralympic Games from 29 August to 9 September.
This will be the third time London has hosted the games having also done so in 1908 and 1948.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is so much better than I expected, thanks largely to its star, Caesar and the brilliance behind that CGI creation, actor Andy Serkis and the special effects wizards of Weta. Every so often a film comes along that accomplishes something with its special effects that 5 years earlier, would have been impossible. In 2001, Weta did that with Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, in which Andy Serkis and the Weta team brought life to Gollum, a fully realized CGI creature, given life by motion capture performance and gifted animators. In 2009, Weta did it again with Avatar. And now, in 2011, they do it again.

The film would not work if Caesar did not seem both real and if Caesar’s thoughts and emotions were not communicated via his eyes, facial expressions, and body language. Andy Serkis captures the motions of a chimp, so well. There is none of the awkwardness that CGI figures used to have. The big climax on the Golden Gate bridge is a wonder to behold, as dozens of apes, all distinct and realistic wreak havoc.

The film is billed as a prequel to the 1968 classic that starred Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowell and is structured in such a way that it can work. Throughout this new film are easter eggs that tie into the original, including background mentions of lost astronauts. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a summer popcorn movie, but like the original it is also a cautionary tale, like most good science fiction. The rise of the apes and the fall of man is all triggered by a single act, by a well intentioned but arrogant man.

Radiohead announces first 2012 European tour dates

We already got the initial batch of North American tour dates from Radiohead for 2012. Now the Europeans get to jump in on the fun as RH have now announced the first tour dates over the pond. It kicks off on June 30th in Rome and goes until July 6th in Berlin.

Don’t worry if your city hasn’t been mentioned yet. More dates will be added soon. But the Italians get first crack at seeing the band live.

Still remember our post about the cool SleepBox concept? Apparently, you’ll be able to spot some of them at the Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow not too long from now. SleepBox is a boon for those who are slithering around on a seat in airports when their flights are delayed. This SleepBox is 2.5m by 1.6m in dimension and can be rented by the passengers for half hour periods.

The architect who designed SleepBox says that each box is made of MDF with a natural ash-wood veneer and every box has good ventilation. The additional features are mobile phone chargers, an alarm, and shelf for notebooks, it also has space for keeping your luggage with night stands. For entertainment, each SleepBox has been equipped with TV and wi-fi router. There’s a safe deposit box to keep your valuable possessions safe. These boxes are maintained with high security and hygienic atmosphere. At present there are one, two and also three-bed SleepBoxes and the price depends on the hours of usage.

£60k jetpack lets you walk on water

A WATER-propelled jetpack has gone one sale for £60,000.

The Jetlev R200, which sucks in water through a long hose before shooting it back out in a powerful stream, can lift users up to 30ft high.
Instructor Dean O'Malley demonstrated the 20lb gadget in Newport Beach, California — hovering over the water.
Punters can rent the gizmo, which is attached to a pod, for £150 a day.

Dean said: "This is actually fairly light so it doesn't take much pressure to get you into the air.

"The key to the whole thing is they off-loaded the weight from the pack into the actual pod unit."

Rio's Sugarloaf Mountain awakens and is revealed to be a sleeping giant (and a metaphor for Brazil itself) in this spectacular spot by Brazil's Neogama/BBH for Johnnie Walker. The latest in the brand's Keep Walking campaign, but the first time Johnnie Walker has developed a local campaign specifically for one country, it was directed by Peter Thwaites of Gorgeous, with effects provided by The Mill NY.
Here are some stats: the production employed 420 people and involved six days of shooting, 11 kilometres of film, 2 tons of equipment, 216 extras and 12.150 hours of computer graphics. It will be accompanied by a print and online campaign.

The video for the second single from the band's recent, seventh LP Wasting Light, sees the team lampooning classic Michael Douglas meltdown flick Falling Down; a 1993 cult movie based one man's escalating anger at the frustration and pointless minutiae of everyday life. 'Walk' then, sees Dave Grohl violate Pat Smear as shopkeeper; beat up thugs in guitarist Chris Schiflett and drummer Taylor Hawkins; and run down bassist Nate Mendel in a golf buggy. Grohl gets the good role then.

The song? It's not the strongest thing on their otherwise mostly solid new album. Points for digs at the unholy triumvirate of Bieber, Bush and Coldplay early on also.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds announce 2012 tour dates

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will be touring the United States again in 2012. Doesn’t Noel look excited?!

The former Oasis guitarist will be back to perform for American fans starting March 28th in Washington, D.C. and will play until April 6th with a show in Atlanta, GA. Gallagher is just finishing up a run of North American dates including two shows in NYC on November 14& 15, two shows in L.A. on November 17 & 18 and a final show on November 19th in San Francisco, CA.

All the 2012 dates can be seen down below and you can grab tickets for those shows starting November 18th. The band will also be performing on Conan on December 12th. Gallagher’s debut solo album is in stores right now.

Hey! Ho! Let's Go: The Anthology is a two–disc compilation that attempts to summarize the Ramones' career in its entirety. It features two previously unissued song versions; "Rock 'n' Roll High School" and "I Want You Around" are the Ed Stasium mixes from the Rock 'n' Roll High School original motion picture soundtrack. Some versions of this album include a hardcover 80 page booklet with liner notes by David Fricke and Danny Fields. Every Ramones studio album is represented with the exception of Acid Eaters, their 1993 covers album.
The album was certified platinum in Argentina as of 2001-04-24, selling more than 40,000 copies. It was also certified silver in the UK (more than 60,000 copies sold) as of December 24, 2004, and gold in Australia by 2006 selling more than 35,000 copies.
Stickers on the original boxset release advertised the collection humorously with the sum: "2 minutes + 3 chords x 58 tracks".
